My Story

Hey, theatre enthusiasts! My name is Sarah Belfrage Honerman and I am the Assistant Professor of Theatre at Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota. From a young age, I have had a flair for the dramatics – but it took me until high school to work up the nerve to step on stage for a live performance. After that first audition and subsequent casting, no one could stop me from basking in the limelight!

As the daughter of an educator, I have always loved learning. In fact, my students have known me to refer to myself as a “lifelong learner” on more than one occasion. While I originally intended to spend my days teaching English, the stage kept calling my name. Eventually, I pursued a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance from Minnesota State University, Mankato. It was there that I was able to truly blend my love of teaching and theatre arts.

It was also in graduate school that I first learned about Theatrical Intimacy. This blooming field is of vital importance to both stage and film. Without this knowledge, theatre artists often fall into unsafe practices and put actors in vulnerable positions. I am currently working through Intimacy Directors & Coordinators (IDC) to become a Certified Intimacy Director.

Academic theatre, especially as a one-person department, can be both challenging and rewarding. It is a constant give and take, learning what tactics work and which elements need adapting for the future. It is a beautiful trial and error approach that keeps me on my toes while allowing me to learn from other theatrical academics and offer my insights as well.

When I’m not working on a theatrical production or teaching, you can find me reading thriller novels, out in nature with my partner and our two beautiful children, or writing new scripts for the stage.
